Oom Frik se Selfsorg Akkommodasie (Uncle Frik's Self Catering Accommodation in Afrikaans) was built in 1910 and originally served as overnight accommodation mainly for churchgoers making use of holy communion (called nagmaalkamers in Afrikaans). Not many people owned motorcars in those days and farmers who lived in the district had to travel up to 90km by horse or horse cart, which could take two days to get to town. So, to attend church on Sundays, it was the norm for families to leave for town on a Friday morning already, sleepover halfway, and do the same on the return.  During these journeys, the so-called "Nagmaalkamers" were used as accommodation and are still used as such today.
